About Us

The Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra provides orchestral experience and quality musical education while fostering teamwork and collaboration and nurturing self-confidence respect for the process, and musical excellence.

The Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra was formed in 2001 by parents and local teachers because of a desire to have our children grow up with orchestra being an essential part of their musical experience.  We have a hope that through BIYO our sons and daughters will see the tremendous joy a musician can experience while working in camaraderie with others; will learn how to express beauty, and will understand the effects joy and beauty can have on the world. We have a hope that through their study of orchestral music they will learn the importance of striving for excellence, and the responsibilites of working in community with others.

BIYO is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization which fosters musicianship and camaraderie within the community through education and performance. Your gift is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

About the Orchestras

Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra currently offers two, tiered string orchestras for musicians ages 7-18.  These two orchestras are open to violin, viola, cello, and double bass players in Kitsap County.

The Sinfonietta is intended for students who are new to performing in a string orchestra.  Students tend to be in late grade school or middle school and perform at a minimum level of Suzuki Book 2.

The focus of this group is to introduce the skills needed to play in an orchestra such as listening, orchestral performance techniques, and an introduction to orchestral style practices.

Students in the Sinfonietta perform all styles of music appropriate to the skill level of the group.

Senior Orchestra

The Senior Orchestra is for intermediate to advanced string players.  Students are typically in high school or late middle school.

Students perform music from all eras and style periods.

Who Can Join?

Students ages 7 – 18 who play violin, viola, cello, or double bass.

The minimum level of technical ability for admission to the Sinfonietta is performance at a level equivalent to Suzuki Book 2 with ability to read notes in the keys of C, G, D, and A, and sight-read simple rhythm patterns to register and audition.
